How to Care for Your Healthcare Uniforms: Scrubs & Tunics Wash Guide

Whether you're working in a hospital, dental practice, care home, or veterinary clinic, your uniform is a vital part of your daily routine. It keeps you comfortable, professional, and, most importantly, protected. But are you caring for it in the best way?

We’ve spent over 119 years supplying premium healthcare uniforms across the UK. Our expert knowledge in uniform design and maintenance means we know what it takes to keep your workwear looking great, performing well, and lasting longer.

Why Uniform Care Matters in Healthcare

Proper care of your healthcare uniform does more than keep it clean. It plays a critical role in maintaining infection control standards, ensuring comfort throughout long shifts, and extending the lifespan of your scrubs and tunics. Good laundry habits also help reduce waste and lower your environmental impact, making your uniform care routine more sustainable in the long run.

ScrubZone & Essentials Collections: Tough on Germs, Built to Last

Designed with durability and hygiene in mind, our ScrubZone and Essentials ranges are made from fabrics that can withstand frequent, high-temperature washing. Washing these uniforms at up to 60°C ensures effective stain removal and bacteria elimination, supporting the hygiene protocols needed in high-risk healthcare environments. These collections are ideal for professionals dealing with frequent exposure to contaminants and heavy soiling.

Forward, CRFT, & ProFlex Ranges: Advanced Fabric, Smarter Wash

The Forward, CRFT, and ProFlex ranges are made from high-performance technical fabrics that perform best when washed at a lower temperature. A maximum wash temperature of 40°C is recommended to maintain the fabric's integrity and extend its life. To ensure thorough disinfection, you can add an antibacterial laundry cleanser. This approach gives you the same level of hygiene protection as a hot wash, while preserving the colour, stretch, and shape of the uniform. Choosing a non-bio, dermatologically tested cleanser that works in cooler temperatures will keep both your uniform and your skin in good condition.

Tunics: Classic Style, Reliable Performance

Our tunics, typically made from a cotton and polyester blend, are built to withstand the demands of daily wear in any healthcare setting. They can be washed regularly at 60°C for full disinfection. Alternatively, for a gentler yet still effective clean, you can wash them at 40°C with an antibacterial cleanser. This dual approach helps maintain the tunic’s colour, embroidery, and structure, while also supporting infection control.

Lower-Temperature Washing: The Eco-Friendly Option

Washing at lower temperatures is not only beneficial for your garments, but also for the environment. It reduces energy consumption and lowers carbon emissions, making it a more sustainable choice. Additionally, cooler washes help protect the fibres in your uniforms, reducing wear and tear and helping your garments last longer.

Professional Uniform Care for Healthcare Workers

Taking the time to care for your workwear properly is a simple yet powerful step. Whether you're in general practice, nursing, dentistry, or veterinary care, the right approach to washing your scrubs and tunics improves hygiene, enhances comfort, maintains a professional appearance, and supports sustainable practices. Over time, it also saves you money by extending the life of your uniforms.
